A Quick Guide to Gold Rates in the UAE
Gold buying in the UAE has its own vocabulary. Here is what each term on this page means, and what to watch out for at the counter.
What do 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K mean?
Karat tells you how pure the gold is. 24K is almost pure gold at 99.9 percent, the kind used for bars and coins. 22K is 91.6 percent pure and the most popular choice for jewellery in the UAE. 21K sits at 87.5 percent, while 18K at 75 percent is harder wearing, which is why it is the favourite for diamond settings and everyday pieces. The higher the karat, the more gold you get per gram, and the higher the price.
Why is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?
Dubai is called the City of Gold for good reason. There is no import duty on gold here, and the tax on jewellery works out lower than what a buyer pays in India. That is why the base rate in Dubai is usually a little lower. After making charges and travel, the real saving for a typical buyer is modest, in the low single digits, so think of Dubai gold as fairly priced rather than dramatically cheap.
What are making charges?
Making charges are the labour fee for turning raw gold into jewellery, added on top of the metal price in the table. In Dubai they typically run from 3 to 8 percent on simple machine made chains and bangles, 8 to 15 percent on standard necklaces and earrings, and 15 to 35 percent on intricate handmade pieces. The key thing to know: making charges are negotiable, the per gram gold rate is not.
Is there VAT on gold in the UAE?
Yes. Jewellery carries 5% VAT, charged mainly on the making charges and the retail margin. Investment grade gold of 99 percent purity or higher can be exempt from VAT, and tourists can reclaim VAT on eligible purchases at the airport, which brings the effective cost down.
How often do gold rates change?
Gold follows the international spot price around the clock on trading days, converted to dirhams at the fixed exchange rate, so it moves through the day instead of being set once. This page refreshes twice daily so you always see a current figure. For the exact price at the counter, jewellers use the DGJG retail rate, which tracks the same market with a small premium.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gold rate today in the UAE?
Today’s indicative rates are AED 491.70 per gram for 24K and AED 450.73 for 22K. The full table above lists every karat per gram and per tola, and it refreshes twice every day.
Is the gold rate the same in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah?
Yes. The per gram rate is standardized across the UAE, so 24K costs the same per gram in every emirate. What differs between shops is the making charge, the labour fee added on top of the metal price.
How is the gold price in the UAE calculated?
It starts from the international spot price of gold in US dollars per troy ounce, converted to dirhams at the fixed peg of 3.6725, divided into grams, then scaled by karat purity. The rates on this page follow that method and are indicative. Retail shops use the DGJG rate, which adds a small premium.
How many grams are in one tola of gold?
One tola equals 11.6638 grams. At today’s 24K rate, one tola costs about AED 5,735.14.
Is it a good idea to buy gold in Dubai as a tourist?
Often yes. Prices are competitive, purity is strictly regulated, and tourists can reclaim VAT on eligible purchases at the airport. Always ask for an itemised invoice showing karat, weight, the per gram rate and making charges.
